Seigo Matsunaga

Born in 1984 in a countryside south of Japan, he took up saxophone at the age of 13, and then turned to electric bass when he met the music of Richard Bona at the age of 16.
Seigo spent the summer of 2002 in Boston to seek musical inspiration, then in NY to study under Matthew Garrison. In October of the same year, he found a mentor in late Niels-Hennig Orsted Pedersen to become his apprentice in Denmark.
In the following years he continued the pursuit of his own music, “the true Japanese sound” as he calls, through travelling, practicing and interacting with the masters of bass including Hein Van De Geyn in South Africa, Michael Klinghoffer in Israel, and Anders Jormin in Sweden.
It was 2009 when Seigo finally set his base in his grandmother’s former residence, a 140 year-old Japanese farm house amidst lush rice fields in the rural area of Fukuoka. He named the place “SHIKIORI”, which stands in Japanese for “A place to where hearts return”, and turned it into a concert venue for his fellow musicians.
His performances has taken place in various countries beside Japan, from India to South Africa. Seigo continues his musical journey through conversation and interaction with people from around the world over the borders of culture and genre.
